Technical Training
(1872-1899).
Dr. Oswaldo Cruz was born in August 5th
, 1872 in Sao Luis do Paraitinga, Brazil. His
father was a doctor called Bento Gonaalves
Cruz and his mother was Amalia Taborda
Bulhoes Cruz. In 1877 his family moved to
Río de Janeiro, 10 years later, Oswaldo
Cruz enterd to the Faculty of Medicine Of Rio
de Janeiro and he graduated as doctor in 1892.
One year later he married to Emilia do Fonseca
and had 6 children: Elisa, Bento, Hercilia, Oswaldo,
Zahra(died when was 1 year old) and Walter. In
1897 he moved with his new family to Paris looking
for a specialization in Microbiology from the
Pasteur Institute.
His great battles
(1899-1907).
In 1899 he came back to Brazil and substituted
his father and took his place, Then, he opened
the first consulting room of clinical analysis
in Rio de Janeiro. Later he joined in the team
to fight against the bubonic plague.
In 1900 he was called to be in charge of the
technical control of the newly created "Instituto
Federal Soroterápico", which he would
be the General Manager in 1902.
Achievements and
glories (1907-1913).
The yellow fever was erradicated from Rio de
Janeiro. Dr. Oswaldo Cruz was awarded with the
gold medal of the 14th Berlin's Congress of Hygiene
and Demography in 1907, when he came back to Brazil,
he was welcomed as a national hero. In 1908 the
former Institute of Experimental Pathology changed
its name to Oswaldo Cruz Institute. In those days
he met Dr. Carlos
Chagas who discovered the parasite that we
know today as Chagas disease which was named Trypanosoma
cruzi in honor to Dr. Oswaldo Cruz who
was his teacher.
His last years (1913-1917)
In 1914 he traveled to Paris and experimented
the beginnings of the 1st World War. In 1915 he
came back to Brazil and his affliction became
serious. Then he worked in some research projects
that were asked by the President of Brazil Nilo
Pecunha.
In February 11th , 1917 he died in his house
in Petropolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
