He was hired in 1962 by the Direction of Transmissive
Diseases. In a modest 2-room laboratory, Fatala
Chaben was in charge of the diagnosis techniques
of the Chagas disease. During June, 1962 while
he was working with the T.
cruzi, he got the chagasic infection.
In July 22, 1962 when he was 26, he died from
an acute miocarditis provoked by the same parasite
that he was trying to fight.
This happened after his graduation paradoxically,
he was paid for the first time by his work being
hospitalized at the Ramos Mejia Hospital, two
days before his death. Later, the Chagas Institute
of Diagnosis and Research, created in 1962 was
named after him when Dr. Arturo H Illia
was the president . Dr . Illia met Salvador
Mazza when he was a student and working in
the Railroad Hospital in Cruz del Eje.
